In a thrilling field sprint, Mark Cavendish crossed the finish line more than a bike length ahead of Tyler Farrer and Thor Hushovd.  Taylor Phinney suffered a mechanical issue with 8 km remaining in the race and finished outside the top 10 but only lost 27 seconds to Cavendish, so he retained the pink jersey as the overall general classification leader.

Tomorrow’s stage should be another day for the sprinters.  Who can defeat Cavendish?
